I felt sheltered. I felt like I won’t be charged with copy infringement because I am give credit to the authors and I use the copyrighted material for educational purposes. So I wondered how at risk I am. This week I have taken the plunge and started seriously researching about copyright infringement.
After some serious research I found this video a great comic relief even though it packs a serious message. Despite the video, please recall from class that there is no “magic” percentage or time limit as far a Fair Use is considered.
Copyright Cops
To be perfectly honest even after reading and researching this week I am not exactly clear how close I am to violating copyright laws. Yes I can spit out a few of the rules, but they seem vague to me. I feel like everything I want to use in my classroom could be seen as illegal and I am stressed about this. I feel lucky that there are additional (less strict) rules for me as an educator, but honestly who has time to teach and contact each individual copyright owner. I suppose that a potential lawsuit is the motivation. Are you all feeling this way?

Hi Katherine, it is good to know that I am not the only one who has this type of anxiety when it comes to copyright infringement. I agree with you 100% that the rules are vague & I am still unsure of myself. The only thing that I do know is that if I were ever being sued for copyright infringement, I would be sure to try and use Fair Use as my defense. Very cute video, thanks for sharing it.

I love this video. When I used video-making for my 6th grade students, they tended to start by making videos that were all like COPS.
